Let's do it!
“What I love about abolition and now use in my own thinking — and when I identify myself as an abolitionist, this is what I have in mind — is the idea that you imagine a world without prisons, and then you work to try to build that world.” - John Forman Jr, quoted in “Is Prison Necessary? Ruth Wilson Gilmore Might Change Your Mind”
This has been a year of deep imagination and trying to build new worlds in community. This ministry began two years ago as a handful of friends in New Orleans sitting around a table to write letters. Since then, it has grown to include chapters across the US and abroad, 3000+ inside penpals and 1100+ outside penpals, numerous working groups, a national hotline, commissary fund redistribution, 70+ Patreon supporters, and much more. This is only possible because of this community’s commitment to solidarity, imagination, and building new worlds together.
As we deepen our work, our financial needs are growing as well. We’re setting a goal of reaching $2000 in monthly Patreon subscriptions by the end of December! We need your support to make it happen.
These donations directly support the ministry’s work, such as by funding commissary and book requests for people on the inside; our national hotline, which accepts dozens of calls per week from inside community members; and other services we need for the project to run, such as website hosting. You can read more about our finances on our website. Can you join us as a Patreon supporter today?
We approach this work from a place of deep abundance, faith, and knowledge that, as a community, we already have the resources we need to build the world we know is possible. If giving financially is not sustainable for you right now, consider supporting in other ways, whether by forwarding this email to family & friends and sharing why you support the ministry, signing up to become a penpal, or joining a regional chapter or working group.
Thank you for being part of this community!
