November with Abolition Apostles
Learn about some of our upcoming events and activities in November
“What if abolition isn't a shattering thing, not a crashing thing, not a wrecking ball event? What if abolition is something that sprouts out of the wet places in our eyes, the broken places in our skin, the waiting places in our palms, the tremble holding in my mouth when I turn to you? What if abolition is something that grows? What if abolishing the prison industrial complex is the fruit of our diligent gardening, building and deepening of a movement to respond to the violence of the state and the violence in our communities with sustainable, transformative love?” - Alexis Pauline Gumbs
Thank you so much to every single person who is contributing to our collective work of the diligent gardening of abolition, as Alexis Pauline Gumbs writes. We are grateful to be in community with and learning alongside so many people who are thinking about what it means to truly embody transformative love, justice, and liberation. Together, may we tend to the collective work of cultivating gardens of abolition.
This month, here are some of the ways we will be coming together in community to engage in this work. Whether you’ve been with us since the beginning or this would be your first meeting, we hope to see you at one or multiple of these events!
Weekly Sunday Orientations at 3pm CT: If you haven’t yet connected with a penpal who is incarcerated, please attend one of our orientation meetings, every Sunday at 3 pm CT via Zoom at this link. (If Sundays never work for you, email us at abolitionapostles@gmail.com and we can arrange for an alternative.)
Becoming Abolitionists Reading Group: Starting on Sunday, November 7, Abolition Apostles will host a weekly study group for Derecka Purnell’s forthcoming Becoming Abolitionists. Let’s read together and continue to build community around the theory and praxis of abolition! We will read one chapter per week, although you’re welcome to attend even if you haven’t been able to complete the reading. Sign up here if you want to join!
